POTOČARI, July 11 (FENA) - On July 11, 1995, the most heinous of all crimes had been committed - the crime of genocide, said today in a video message the Undersecretary of the United Nations and Special Adviser to the Secretary-General for Genocide Prevention, Alice Nderitu.

Addressing the commemoration of the 26th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, she stressed that the international community recognized the responsibility, including that of the UN, under whose flag Srebrenica was then a Protected Area, for failing to prevent the crime.

"We have learned important lessons, and our regret for the loss of innocent lives does not stop. Remembering the past is the right of the victims' families and an important part of the reconciliation process, especially for the future," she pointed out.

She also warned of dangerous trends of the denial of genocide and war crimes, glorifying war criminals and hate speech, adding that the potential for reconciliation is present in all societies, as characteristics of mutual respect, understanding, dignity and justice for all.

She believes that reconciliation projects are the best way to move towards the future, calling for responsibility not to be attributed to an entire community, but to individuals.
