SARAJEVO, July 11 (FENA) - As part of the UK National Memorial Day of the Srebrenica Genocide, as a state program marking July 11 in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, member of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency Šefik Džaferović spoke today in a video message.
Džaferović thanked British authorities and the organization Remembering Srebrenica for organizing a state commemoration every July 11 in memory of the victims of genocide, saying that this is something that is highly valued in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“In this regard, I give full support to the activities of the organization Remembering Srebrenica to raise awareness of crimes committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as to educate people in the UK and around the world on the importance of combating hatred and prejudice,” he said.
He added that genocide in Srebrenica was the biggest crime committed on the European soil since World War II.
“Five decades after the world said 'never again', in July 1995, terrifying executions were carried out in eastern Bosnia, murdering more than 8,000 men and boys in just a few days. They were, as The Hague judges pointed out, 'scenes of hell written on the darkest pages of human history',” Džaferović reminded.
He emphasized that these mass executions, which were carried out according to the patterns of Nazi firing squads, were the final act of a three-year genocidal process carried out by forces led by Slobodan Milošević, Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić, in order to establish an ethnically pure Greater Serbia.
He also reminded that a large number of survivors had found refuge in countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, and the fact that, despite the enormous trauma, they managed to rebuild their lives indicates the fascinating strength of their spirit.
