SARAJEVO, July 15 (FENA) - The Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Sarajevo Canton and the government of Switzerland regarding the project "Urban Transformation of Sarajevo" was signed today in Sarajevo.

The memorandum was signed by the Minister of Communal Economy, Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection of the Sarajevo Canton Enver Hadžiahmetović and the Ambassador of Switzerland to Bosnia and Herzegovina Daniel Hunn.

In the next four years, the focus of the cooperation will be on applying the latest knowledge and modern technologies in the field of urban planning and the exchange of experiences from various successful projects in Zurich, Switzerland.

The project "Urban Transformation of Sarajevo" promotes an innovative, transparent and sustainable approach to urban development that includes citizen participation and integrates aspects related to the environment, air pollution and climate change.

With the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, institutions of the Sarajevo Canton will enter into cooperation with one of the world's leading universities - the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETHZ in Zurich as well as with the City of Zurich.

This cooperation aims to support the modernization of the system of integrated urban planning in the Canton and the creation of better conditions for sustainable socio-economic development.

"The modernization of urban planning in the Sarajevo Canton that we have agreed on today is based on the know-how and good practices applied in Switzerland. The UTS project is the result of Switzerland's commitment to support the prosperous and sustainable development of Bosnia and Herzegovina and to enable the active participation of its citizens. I am very pleased to see the important role the country's diaspora has taken in creating this project by contributing with its engagement and expertise," said the Swiss Ambassador to BiH Daniel Hunn.

The Cantonal Minister for Communal Economy, Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection Enver Hadžiahmetović said: "The Canton of Sarajevo is burdened with many problems, of which the urban development problems related to environmental protection stand out. The project 'Urban Transformation of Sarajevo' will contribute to the improvement of the urban planning system and the development of the new Urban plan for the Sarajevo urban area through the exchange of knowledge, experience and skills with the City of Zurich and ETHZ University. An important part of the cooperation is environmental protection and air quality, which is a very significant problem in Sarajevo Canton. The cooperation with the Government of Switzerland will allow our institutions to have access to modern skills, knowledge and software tools. I sincerely hope that the cooperation with the Government of Switzerland will deepen in other segments as well."

Switzerland has provided 4.5 million Swiss francs for the project. As part of the project, ETHZ will provide expertise and support in the development of the Canton's urban plan, as well as relevant academic training and research at the University of Sarajevo. The consortium consisting of Urbaplan Switzerland, Helvetas Switzerland and Enova BiH is tasked to coordinate project partners and support the improvement of the urban planning system in the Sarajevo Canton. The Government of the Canton will provide the necessary political support, human resources and access to relevant information for the effective implementation of the project.
