SARAJEVO, July 27 (FENA) - The House of Representatives of the Parliament of the Federation of BiH adopted the Draft Law on Protection from Domestic Violence, which was sent for a 60-day public debate.

“A total of four women out of ten experienced domestic violence but did not report the violence because they do not believe in the protection system. Violence is certainly unacceptable and a problem that we need to solve, because it is a problem of the social community. By ratifying international agreements, i.e. the Istanbul Convention, we have committed ourselves to work on the prevention of violence in general, especially in the family,” said an MP of the FBiH Parliament Kenela Zuko.

The Foundation for Local Democracy, the Network of Non-Governmental Organizations in BiH "Safe Network" contributed the most to drafting of the law.

“In the Foundation, we have five safe houses run by non-governmental organizations and which provide specialized assistance to victims of domestic violence. On average, one safe house needs 320,000 KM per year to function, i.e. a total of 1,600,000 KM. The draft law envisages a solution in a way that it will be financing 40 percent at the FBiH level, 40 percent at the cantonal level and 20 percent in the municipalities where the victim lives,” Zuko explained.

Currently, the Government of the Federation of BiH annually allocates 250,000 KM for a grant, i.e. support to safe houses in the Federation of BiH. According to the new proposal, 400,000 KM should be allocated.
