SARAJEVO, August 29 (FENA) - Numerous delegations, family members and citizens paid tribute yesterday to 43 civilians killed in the massacre at Markale City Market after a mortar shell was fired from the aggressor positions around the besieged capital. On August 28, 26 years ago, 83 civilians were severely injured, of whom three were children.
Numerous representatives of the authorities and citizens of Sarajevo paid tribute to the victims by laying flowers, holding a minute’s silence and saying prayers.
Vice Speaker of the Sarajevo Canton Assembly Vibor Handžić reminded that 26 years ago a mortar shell was fired from enemy positions from the direction of the Mount Trebević, which killed 43 and seriously and lightly wounded 84 citizens of Sarajevo. This is not the first time that the citizens of Sarajevo, trying to survive, were killed and it was no accident. This crime was the reason for starting the first phase of NATO bombing from August 30 to September 1.
He appealed for respect for all victims, for punishing all criminals and respect for all, and said that he would persevere in the fight and bring victory over those who spread and propagate hatred and intolerance.
In that sense, Mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karić, said that the anniversaries of the suffering of citizens should always be marked and that they would always send messages that "we do not forget, but we forgive and wish a better tomorrow for all our children."
Mortar shell of 120 mm caliber, fired from the enemy’s positions from the direction of Mt Trebević, exploded at the northern entrance to the City Market, and this is considered to be one of the most terrible crimes committed by the Serb military, police and paramilitary formations in the besieged Sarajevo.
