US senators at the presentation of demining activities of AF BiH on the Žuč Hill

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, August 31 (FENA) - For the purpose of presenting the donations from the United States Government intended for the defense and security of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of BiH (AF BiH) hosted a delegation of US senators on the Žuč Hill near Sarajevo on Monday.

The delegation included Senators Richard Shelby, Mike Crapo, John Cornyn, Deb Fischer and Roger Marshall, and Acting First Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs, Stanley Brown.

The presentation and handover of donated demining equipment at the demonstration demining site was attended by the Minister of Defense of BiH Sifet Podžić, US Ambassador to BiH Eric Nelson, Chief of the Joint Staff of the AF BiH, Colonel-General Senad Mašović with Major General Ivica Jerkić, Chairman of the Joint Committee for Defense and Security of BiH, Asim Sarajlić, Commander of NATO Headquarters Sarajevo, Brigadier General Eric Folkestad, Chief of Staff of EUFOR in BiH Brigadier General Szilárd Gerőfi, Assistant Minister of Defense of BiH for Policies and Planning Dženan Redžo, US Military Envoy to BiH Brigadier Mike Tarquinto and other high officials of the MoD, AF BiH and the US Embassy in BiH.

After expressing gratitude for the constant assistance of the US Government on demining projects in BiH, and in accordance with the annual plans of bilateral military cooperation, Minister Podžić praised the AF BiH for its exceptional efforts and results in mine clearance in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"The implementation of these activities requires adequate funding and allocation of the necessary resources. If we want the AF BiH to be able to carry out this mission, then the authorities must pay much more attention to this institution because our goal is for BiH to finally be cleared of landmines," said Minister Podžić.

On that occasion, the United States donated 200 sets of self-supporting demining visors and 250 sets of protective demining vests. US Ambassador Nelson pointed out that these days the parters are marking the completion of the project 'Sarajevo without mines', which was financed by the USA, and in which members of the BiH Armed Forces participated free of charge. There are no more mine danger in all four municipalities of the City of Sarajevo and Vogošća and the East Old Town.

"Using their own capacities, the AF BiH contributes to the safety of citizens on a daily basis. The United States was proud to donate the key equipment, but we call on political leaders to provide adequate financial resources so that the AF BiH would not depend on donations in its tasks," concluded Ambassador Nelson.

Stanley Brown pointed out that the project "Sarajevo without mines" returned six million square meters to the citizens for use, and that the United States will continue to help.

"The United States is proud to be a partner to the BiH authorities in this important task. We are happy to continue to support efforts to save lives," concluded Brown.

General Mašović also mentioned other significant American donations from the past, such as demining robots, X-rays, motor vehicles and night-vision devices with other equipment, as well as the training of explosives removal technicians (EOD).
