Salkić: Discrimination against Bosniak students in the RS entity continues

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 1 (FENA) - The entity of RS Vice President Ramiz Salkić sent yet another open letter to the Office of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina (OHR), ambassadors of member states of the Peace Implementation Council (PIC), the OSCE Mission to BiH and the European Union Delegation to BiH, in which he pointed out "the problems that Bosniak students and parents face at the beginning of another school year".

"Today, when the new school year begins in Bosnia and Herzegovina, I want to remind you that discrimination against Bosniak pupils and students in the education system of the entity of RS continues in Bosnia and Herzegovina," Salkić pointed out in the letter.

At the same time, he reminds that Bosniak students are prevented from studying and calling their language as they choose and feel.

"Despite the verdicts of the courts in this entity, but also the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the authorities of this entity continue to discriminate, violate the entity constitution, violate children's rights and deny the Bosnian language," warns the RS Vice President, stating that "Article 7 of the RS entity Constitution clearly states that the official languages of the RS are: the language of the Serb people, the language of the Bosniak people and the language of the Croat people.”

The official scripts are Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. In areas where other language groups live, their languages and scripts are also in official use, in the manner prescribed by law.”

However, as Salkić further states, the RS entity authorities "in their desire to fully 'Orthodoxize' and ethnically cleanse the educational process, violate the entity Constitution, human rights and freedoms, which is expressly prohibited by law and the Constitution. The RS Constitution provides for a non-discriminatory education system where it is stated that everyone has the right to education under equal conditions.

Salkić also warns in the letter that in addition to such constitutional and legal provisions, "the educational process and schools in the RS entity abound in other forms of discrimination such as school names, the Orthodox patron saints for the schools, harmonized teaching process with Serbia, treatment of convicted war criminals for genocide as heroes in textbooks, etc."

In this context, the Vice President of the RS entity calls on international actors to engage more now than ever in eliminating discrimination in the educational process in this entity.
