Organic agriculture in BiH has suffered great damage this year

FENA Muhamed Hadžibegić

SARAJEVO, September 5 (FENA) - President of the Association "Organic FBiH" Sejad Herceg told FENA that organic producers, as well as other farmers, have suffered great damage this year due to the biggest drought in BiH in the last few decades.

He specified that all agricultural producers had more than 60 percent of the damage in production, and that livestock was not spared either.

“We have repeatedly mentioned that weather disasters hinder agricultural production the most, whether it is floods, snow, frosts or droughts like this year. However, inadequate institutional solutions further complicate the work of farmers,” Herceg pointed out.

He added that without a systematic approach to solving problems in agriculture, it is difficult to expect improvement in the sector.

Herceg appealed to the authorities at the state and local level to support the development of agriculture by establishing development and resource centers that would apply for funds from various international organizations and funds.

He reminded that currently BiH farmers suffer significant damage compared to producers from other countries due to the inability to apply for these funds.

Due to that, but also due to insufficient incentives, BiH farmers are not competitive on the market.
