Agreements on coal furnaces replacement signed in the Sarajevo Canton

FENA Muhamed Hadžibegić

SARAJEVO, September 13 (FENA) - Representatives of the Sarajevo Canton Government, the Swedish Embassy in BiH and the UN Development Program (UNDP) today signed agreements on replacing coal furnaces to reduce air pollution in the Sarajevo Canton.

For that purpose, the Government of the SC and the Embassy of Sweden provided a total of 2.9 million KM, in equal amounts.

Swedish Ambassador Johanna Stromquist said that this is an important project because about 50 percent of air pollution in the SC during the winter is caused by heating in private buildings.

She explained that the pollution will be reduced because it will enable those households to replace their old and inefficient furnaces and boilers with new and more efficient ones.

The Prime Minister of the SC, Edin Forto, said that, if a sufficient number of such projects is realized, it will be possible to measure the improvement of air quality in Sarajevo.

The UNDP Resident Representative in BiH Steliana Nedera stated that in order to solve the problem of air pollution in BiH, it is necessary to ban the sale of uncertified solid fuel furnaces.
