UNHCR: Community-based project: New multifunctional playground in Bihać

FENA Press release

BIHAĆ, September 16 (FENA) – The pupils of the elementary school "Harmani II" Bihać will soon get a new sports ground where they will be able to participate in sports classes and where children from the local community and refugee and migrant children will be able to spend their free time and enjoy interacting with their peers”.

The Director of the elementary school Amir Fajić is grateful to all organizations and individuals supporting the implementation of this community-based project, emphasizing that this project is the result of synergy between the elementary school, the Una-Sana Canton (USC) Government, the USC Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, and UNHCR.

"It is difficult to describe how positive the contribution of this project is, both for our pupils and the entire community. It is not easy to turn an idea into reality, and we are primarily grateful to UNHCR and the USC Government. There is nothing better than experiencing children's joy, and we will realize that with this project for sure and experience it," said Mr. Fajić.

"We are glad to participate in this project and have the opportunity to support an initiative that brings something new to the local community." Our participation in this project is also a symbolic gesture of gratitude to the City of Bihać for all the support they selflessly provide to refugees and migrants," said Vahidin Ogrešević, Head of the UNHCR field office in Bihać.

The new multifunctional playground will cover 900 square meters and contain a field for football, basketball, volleyball, and handball with accompanying equipment and infrastructure.

The total estimated value of the planned works is 166,000 KM.

The construction of the playground was co-financed through a joint project of UNHCR and IOM, "Enhancing Social Cohesion in Communities Hosting People on the Move", funded by the European Commission - European Union Instrument contributing to Peace and Stability (IcSP).

The project's focus is on social cohesion and support to local communities for community-based projects that can benefit both local communities and people on the move.
