'Code red for humanity': Urgent climate action needed

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 1 (FENA) - Meeting with media representatives on the topic "Climate Crisis: What does the "code red for humanity" mean for Bosnia and Herzegovina?" was held recently to point out the importance of concrete climate actions to reduce the impact of climate change.

On that occasion, the key findings of the published report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) were discussed, with special reference to the impact of climate change on BiH, ahead of the COP26 conference to be held in November in Glasgow.

“We are talking about the biggest challenge of our time and that will redefine our world as we know it, and that is the climate crisis. Global warming is already generating more frequent extreme weather conditions and climate events in all regions, which we are witnessing in BiH as well. We, the United Nations, are fully committed to helping BiH on this path, so we have supported the reduction of CO2 emissions by 13,150 tons, improved living conditions for more than 250,000 people and created more than 1,800 green jobs since 2015. This shows that changes can be achieved,” said the UN Resident Coordinator in BiH Ingrid Macdonald.

According to the organizers of the meeting, in the process of raising the level of awareness of citizens, the media have an important role in transmitting key information about the need for action when it comes to climate change.

British Ambassador to BiH Matt Field pointed out that there is good and bad news.

“The bad news is that, no matter how serious the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic were on the economy, health and individual lives, something more dangerous is ahead of us. If we do not significantly change our direction, decarbonise the global economy 3 to 5 times faster than we are currently doing, we will not meet the goals of the Paris Agreement on limiting the warming. The good news is that the possibility of this change is entirely in our hands. We can make decisions today that will reverse this trajectory, such as renewable energy sources, clean investments, green infrastructures,” said Field.

UNDP Resident Representative in BiH Steliana Nedera emphasizes that the space for action is being reduced in order to change the course of economic development around the world, because science has shown that human activities have a great impact on the balance of the planet.

“Climate change affects everyone. It is not only the responsibility of governments to take steps, but also of companies to ensure that their work does not pollute the environment. The responsibility is also on each individual. UNDP sees climate change as an urgent and priority issue. As part of the UN family in BiH, we remain committed to making efforts to implement activities together with partners,” said Nedera.

The gathering was organized within the project "Increasing investment in public facilities with low carbon emissions in BiH", which is implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), with the financial support of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Ministry of Physical Planning, Construction and Ecology of the RS, the FBiH Ministry of Physical Planning, and the entity funds for environmental protection.
