FENA Muhamed Hadžibegić

SARAJEVO, October 5 (FENA) - The beginning of the work of the Action Coalition for Justice and Rights in BiH was made official today in Sarajevo, as part of the global UN Women "Generation for Equality" campaign.

The event focused on how much society loses when women are not active in the labor market, as well as the need for a systematic solution to the issues of child care, care for the elderly and sick, informal economy and unpaid work at home.

The UN Resident Coordinator in BiH Ingrid Macdonald pointed out that the global campaign was launched to encourage the economic empowerment of women.

"Here in BiH, 36.5 percent of women are active in the labor market and at the same time, they take care of children as well as many other domestic and social activities, which is an additional burden for them," said Macdonald.

She added that when women have paid childcare, paid maternity leave and an environment that supports them, all this helps the whole society to progress.

The Director of the Gender Equality Agency of BiH, Samra Filipović-Hadžiabdić, stated that it was time for us to start valorizing unpaid work in society, and according to the agency's data, 89 percent of that work is done by women.

"Also, it is the obligation of the state to take action to enable women to enter the labor market because BiH is in last place in Europe in this regard," underlined Filipović-Hadžiabdić.

The British Ambassador to BiH Matthew Field said that the initiative implies increasing the government's awareness of women's issues and better access to funds, and more gender-responsible products and services that will give women opportunities that men often take for granted.

Lisa Curman, Deputy Head of the Development Cooperation Department at the Swedish Embassy in BiH, expressed hope that the project would result in concrete changes in improving gender equality and overall social prosperity in BiH.

In addition to UN Women, the event was organized by the BiH Gender Equality Agency at the BiH Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees, the RS Gender Center, the FBiH Gender Center, the UN in BiH, and the British Embassy, with the support of the Government of Sweden.
