Engaging public and private sectors in BiH - SDG Week in Bosnia and Herzegovina

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 12 (FENA) - The first Sustainable Development Week in Bosnia and Herzegovina ended with the signing of the Declaration on Sustainable Development. The Sustainable Development Goals Week in BiH was held from 4 to 8 October and served as a platform for meetings, consultations and discussions to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in BiH.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Week in Bosnia and Herzegovina was held from 4 – 8 October 2021 and served as a meeting, consultation and discussion platform for the promotion of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. 800+ live audience followed 70+ local, regional and global keynote speakers that actively participated in 7 events organized under the framework of the SDG Week.   The recorded sessions were viewed by 4200+ people over the span of 5 days.

The 2021 edition of the SDG Week aimed to raise awareness and engage the key audiences in discussions over new trends in SDG governance and localization, fostering decarbonization, innovation and smart economic growth, and ultimately contributing to creating a society of equal opportunities.

Building on the basis created during SDG Business Week editions from 2018 – 2020, the SDG Week expanded its scope and engaged public sector authorities. Two events that opened SDG Week aimed to support authorities at the local level with the implementation of the newly adopted SDG Framework in BIH. The events were organized with Alliances of cities and municipalities of Federation of BIH and the Republika Srpska which gathered 100+ local mayors and representatives of authorities that exchanged the experiences and elements of good practice from BIH and Italy.

SDG Week also tried to inspire the audience and put the spotlight on the future of work through a special edition of the Future Talks by UNDP Accelerator Lab.  Future Talks brought together inspiring speakers from different continents to discuss the future of work. The sessions can be watched on LINK.

One of the highlights of SDG Week was the conference “Greening the economy – accelerating business” that brought together businesses and financial institutions to discuss what the green transition entails for the private sector and to deepen the understanding of the benefits of investing in green solutions. The COVID-19 crisis is an opportunity to bring closer together the interests of the governments, financial institutions, and businesses in making smart choices for the transition towards a green and circular economy and concomitantly making progress towards the Paris Climate Agreement commitments and the requirements of EU accession.

During the SDG Week, lessons learned from activities that promoted green transition were broadcasted in a series of video materials enriching the existing palette of approaches in decarbonization and circular economy.

As in previous years, one flagship event is always dedicated to academia and youth. This year we were happy to support the private-public partnership between Sarajevo School of Science and Technology (SSST) and the School of Economics and Business of the University of Sarajevo (EFSA), in cooperation with other public universities in BIH that focused on the Future of Education: Universities 4.0 and engaged youth and students in a dialogue on new directions and tools education should embrace for sustainable life and work.

Not by coincidence, the SDG Week closed with the private sector. The SDG Week brought together progressive companies that share the same values based on Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals. The winners of the SDG Business Pioneers Award from 2019 – 2021 already demonstrated their commitment to the creation of decent jobs, zero tolerance to corruption and reduced impact on the environment. They reaffirmed that commitment by signing the Pledge for Sustainable Development as an example to be followed by others, hoping it will result in a healthier, more competitive and greener private sector in BiH.

The SDG Week in Bosnia and Herzegovina is supported by the project SDGs Roll-out Support and Private Sector Engagement, funded by Sweden and implemented by United Nations Development Progam (UNDP) in BIH.
