SARAJEVO, October 12 (FENA) - On the occasion of the World Disaster Risk Reduction Day (DRR), October 13, UN Resident Coordinator in BiH Ingrid Macdonald, the BiH Security Minister Selmo Cikotić and Swiss Ambassador to BiH Daniel Hunn pointed out that it is an opportunity to reflect on the impact of the 2014 floods and the importance of action to reduce the risk of recurrence of similar disasters.
They reminded that the floods in May 2014 affected a quarter of the country's territory and a million people, which represents about 27 percent of its population. The total damage was approximately USD 1.7 billion, while economic losses exceeded USD 1.5 billion.
It was emphasized that the alarming experience of the flood disaster had much deeper, long-term consequences for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which equals a five-year setback in achieving the goals of greater gender equality, lower poverty rates, reduced marginalization and greater equality of minority groups and people with disabilities.
Given that BiH is a disaster-prone country, the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina makes reducing the risks and impacts of these disasters one of the key security issues for the country and the region and is working with the United Nations and the Swiss Government in BiH to establish a comprehensive risk reduction framework.
The program we are working on together is crucial for BiH because it not only contributes to strengthening the disaster risk management model, but is also the basis for long-term risk management and sustainable development, for the benefit of all living in Bosnia and Herzegovina, stated the BiH Ministry of Security.
