FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 22 (FENA) - Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča concluded today his four days official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina where he met with members of the Presidency of BiH Željko Komšić, Šefik Džaferović and Milorad Dodik, the Foreign Minister, leaders of political parties, civil society organizations, independent analysts and media as well as representatives of the international community.

The meetings were focused on the peace, security and stability challenges and concerns in the country, the regional developments as well as cooperation with the United Nations.

He reiterated the Secretary-General’s message in calling for the need to redouble efforts towards strengthening reconciliation efforts, trust, mutual understanding and social cohesion both in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in the region. In particular, he stressed the need to enhance constructive dialogue among all communities as a necessary basis for finding sustainable solutions for the peaceful and prosperous future of the country. He urged political leaders to refrain from unilateral actions that could undermine the achievements over the past almost 26 years since the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Annexes were signed, underscoring that the hard-won peace must be protected and further nurtured, announced the UN MIssion in BiH.

He also reminded of the Secretary-General’s call to all those in the position of power to refrain from denying the seriousness of all atrocity crimes, including genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, that have been adjudicated by international justice institutions, noting the importance of individual accountability, without attributing collective guilt, as an essential step toward a more durable reconciliation in the country.

Civil society, independent media and non-governmental organizations called for greater support from, and cooperation with, the United Nations to help strengthen the efforts of “local champions of peace” and other positive agents of change, including youth and women and notably at grassroots level. He committed to strengthening cooperation with them.

ASG Jenča discussed opportunities for continued cooperation with the European Union, in view of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s leadership’s commitment towards a European perspective, as well as with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the Council of Europe.

He engaged with the United Nations Country Team on advancing the work of the Organization around social cohesion as a prioritized pillar of the newly agreed United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework with Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as around the Secretary-General’s Global Strategy on Hate Speech, and his Call to Action on Human Rights.
