SARAJEVO, October 27 (FENA) - The Kashmir Black Day and the 74th anniversary of the occupation of Kashmir by the Indian Army in 1947 were marked today at the premises of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Sarajevo.

Every October 27, the fall of Kashmir under Indian control is marked as the Black Day. Since then, thousands of Muslim inhabitants have suffered a great deal in the past years in Kashmir, the Ambassador of Pakistan to BiH, Akhtar Jamil Rao said today.

He stated that "this is a very important day for Pakistan and Kashmir and that it is no coincidence that the day was declared a black day in the history of Pakistan because on that date the Indian army forcibly and illegally occupied Kashmir."

"The people of Kashmir have been denied their basic human rights and are not allowed the right to self-determination. The resolutions of the United Nations Security Council provide for the right of expression and self-determination of the people of Kashmir, but India has not allowed them to do so for 74 years," he reminded.

The problems in the region are becoming more complicated and the situation is getting worse especially in the last decade, the ambassador points out, where people have been killed and women raped.

Kashmir is also facing an economic crisis, which means poverty is at high level and the people are denied the right to practice their religion.

The Ambassador says that he is grateful to the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina who have always expressed solidarity with the people of Kashmir with a hope that such support would continue, and called on the international community to react so that all countries respect basic human rights.

After Pakistan and India gained independence from Great Britain in 1947, Pakistan sought the region of Kashmir, with a majority Muslim population but the then ruler of Kashmir made an agreement with India, so the region ended up under Indian rule.

After that, a war broke out for Kashmir on October 27, 1947. The Indian army eventually established control over the Kashmir region.
