Izetbegović meets with Ambassador of the Russian Federation Igor Kalabukhov

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 28 (FENA) - President of the Party of Democratic A<ction (SDA), Bakir Izetbegović, talked today with the Ambassador of the Russian Federation in BiH, Igor Kalabukhov.

The interlocutors exchanged views on the current political situation and the overall relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Russian Federation.

It was assessed that a higher level of understanding is needed, which can be achieved through an increased level of visits and communication at the interstate level.

Ambassador Kalabukhov emphasized that the Russian Federation is interested in preserving peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina and that in that sense it is necessary to strengthen the dialogue in BiH itself, but also within the international community.

Ambassador Kalabukhov informed Izetbegović that the Russian Federation essentially supports the extension of EUFOR's Althea mission, but that it can hardly support the proposed text of the UN Security Council resolution if it includes the role of High Representative Christian Schmidt.

Izetbegović emphasized that the Russian Federation can be a stabilizing factor through a balanced attitude towards all sides in BiH and understanding towards the established commitments and positions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which are not directed against Russian interests.

He expressed the expectation that the Russian Federation would consider its position towards the High Representative. He stressed in particular that undermining the authority of the High Representative encourages destructive political forces, which threaten stability and peace.

Izetbegović pointed out that the blockades of the BiH institutions are unacceptable, and that they can be removed through electoral reform and changes to the Constitution, by reducing the competencies of the houses of peoples exclusively to the protection of the vital national interest.

Part of the conversation was also dedicated to cultural cooperation, and in that context, they discussed the possibility of exchanging historical documents and returning to our country the Charter of Kulin Ban, which is in the possession of the Russian Federation.
