SARAJEVO, November 11 (FENA) - German Foreign Minister Heiko Mass claims that Germany provides the greatest bilateral support to Bosnia and Herzegovina, but that it will not direct German taxpayers' money to an entity that is actively working to destroy Bosnia and Herzegovina as a state.
“We will not be able to follow the continuation of this irresponsible policy with folded arms. Because such a policy does not only harm the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It also regresses all the progress that has been achieved under the Dayton Peace Agreement over many years with the huge support of the international community, the EU and Germany,” Mass said in an interview with the Klix portal.
He pointed out that BiH is currently having the worst political crisis since the end of the war in BiH in 1995, and that it affects him when he hears that people in the country are afraid of violence again.
Mass stressed that the High Representative plays a key role and that he should strengthen state institutions at all levels and monitor the implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement.
“He has the full support of Germany, our partners from the EU and the vast majority of members of the UN Security Council. He has at his disposal a wide range of instruments, which includes the powers granted to him by the international community, the so-called Bonn powers,” he explained.
Speaking about the economy, Mass said that the EU is the largest trade partner of Bosnia and Herzegovina and that the EU perspective is a great opportunity for Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region for a lasting future in peace and prosperity.
“But the EU perspective is also in the geostrategic interest of the EU itself. As Europeans, we share a common past - and we are convinced - and a common future,” he added.
However, he said that the conditions for membership must be met and that Bosnia and Herzegovina applied for membership in 2016.
