SARAJEVO, November 14 (FENA) - A nomination file for the entry of the intangible cultural heritage element "Tradition of Lipizzaner Horse Breeding" on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity has been submitted to UNESCO, and the Stud Farm "Vučijak" from in Prnjavor, Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been breeding Lipizzaner horses for decades.
The stud farm "Vučijak" was established in April 1946, by a decree of the Ministry of Defense. Formed "for the needs of the people's army", it was named after the nearby Vučijak hill, and with a long tradition, it has been one of the trademarks of Prnjavor.
Under the safe leadership of the director of the "Vučijak" stud farm, Miroslav Milanković, the stud farm is unique, because today there are 110 purebred Lipizzaners in it. With the special existence of six lines of stallions: Maestoso, Napolitano, Siglavy, Conversano, Favory and Pluto and 16 mares, this guarantees the great genetic potential of this prestigious breed of horse.
Lipizzaners are a well-known and sought-after breed of horse. They are sociable and friendly for both dressage and riding. The breed dates from 1580, and was created by crossing the Slavic Karst, Neapolitan, Spanish and Arabian horses. The stud farm for this breed was located in Lipica, Slovenia, where this breed of horse originates.
In the 16th century, several foals were procured, which significantly influenced the Lipizzaner breed as it is known today. The horses were procured from Italy, Spain, Denmark and Germany. This breed has developed over the years and matured into a hardy, fast and strong breed of horses.
The body of the Lipizzaner is characterized by a strong and strong back, firm croup and a highly planted tail. A long and graceful gait is favored by a long shoulder blade and a short forearm. The joints are developed with strong tendons and hooves. Strong and bony legs, strong and sharp mane and tail hair, give this breed a special grace and elegance. The average height is 154 cm and the horse weighs about 500 kilos.
The horses in Vučijak are taken care of by 17 employees who work in shifts that cover 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"The stud farm Vučijak is constantly working on preserving and improving the genetic material of Lipizzaner horses, the greatest possible support would be the possibility of cooperation with stud farms in Croatia and Slovenia in terms of exchanging genetic material," said Milanković in an interview with FENA.
Apart from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia are also participating in the serial nomination project.
