SARAJEVO, November 14 (FENA) - The "Green Agenda for the Western Balkans - Implementation in BiH", was the topic of today's session of the association 'Circle 99', where eminent experts in the field of energy efficiency and biodiversity pointed out the importance of water protection, its use and good ecological status.

The introductory speakers of the session were professors Dubravka Bošnjak, Tarik Kupusović, Martin Tais and Mehmed Cero. They reminded that in the Green Agenda, water is mentioned as part of the fight against pollution, which clearly leads to a decline in water quality.

Kupusović warned that without adequate protection, the use of water will be too expensive or even impossible, and water has a crucial impact on human health, social and economic development and the function of ecosystems.

He believes that one of the biggest challenges in BiH is finding sustainable solutions for water treatment after use. About 75 percent of the population in BiH has access to public water supply services, while only about 40 percent of the population is covered by public wastewater services. In total, only 15 percent of the population is connected to wastewater treatment plants.

Kupusović emphasized that water management in BiH is a very complex issue in general because three water areas of the Sava River have been established (under the jurisdiction of FBiH, RS and Brčko District), as part of the international Sava and Danube basins, and two more water areas of the international Adriatic basin (FBiH and RS).

"Clear procedures are necessary for all relevant institutions to act jointly and in a coordinated manner," Kupusović emphasized.

In this regard, Martin Tais believes that air quality should be more seriously managed, giving priority to renewable energy sources that need to be built and CO2 emissions reduced - one should increase and the other should decrease, gradually, and our energy independence should be taken into account.

"Our goal is the Green Agenda and renewable energy sources," Tais said.

In order to improve the situation, the ecosystem must be oriented towards appropriate, sustainable use, as Professor Cero said, strategically Bosnia and Herzegovina plans to increase the area of protected areas from the current four percent to 10 percent by 2030 in various forms of protection: national parks, protected landscapes, etc.

"This implies appropriate sustainable use, not only in terms of protection in certain zones, but certain transition zones should be areas for retention of people," Cero pointed out.

The policy paper entitled "Green Agenda for the Western Balkans - Implementation in Bosnia and Herzegovina" is a strategy, which, as Bošnjak reminded, promotes the transition from the traditional economic model to a sustainable economy.
