Matthias Fink: When war happens, the truth is the first victim

SARAJEVO, November 15 (FENA) - German historian and journalist Matthias Fink is the author of the book ‘Srebrenica: Chronology of the Genocide or What Happened to Mirnes Osmanović’, whose audio version was presented at the Sarajevo City Hall.

It is the story of a boy Mirnes Osmanović who was abducted from his mother's arms during the genocide in Srebrenica and later killed, and his father who tried to break through to the free territory (with a group of men) and then was killed. Their remains were later found and buried in Potočari.

As Fink reminded in a press statement, the International Court of Justice in The Hague has opened its digital documents and archives, and there is an insight into all documents presented to the Court.

“It is an important archive because it gives researchers and journalists the opportunity to, based on the facts, talk about what happened. Before the opening of that archive, there were not many works published on it,” he said, adding that his goal was to talk about the victims.

Fink said there have always been attempts to deny the crime. He points out that this is the case in Germany with Nazi crimes, but also in Belgrade and Banja Luka or elsewhere.

“There are attempts to present what happened in a different way or to deny it. When war happens, the truth is actually the first victim,” he stressed.

For Almasa Salihović, spokeswoman of the Potočari-Srebrenica Memorial Center, but also for the surviving victim, any documentation of genocide, based on facts, means a lot. The Memorial Center tries to find a place in the library for each title on the subject, for research.

The book, entitled 'Srebrenica: A Chronology of the Genocide or What Happened to Mirnes Osmanović', published in 2016 in Hamburg, is the result of many years of research.
