Gahler: Dodik must stop and revert all steps of disintegration (VIDEO)

BRUSSELS, 16 November (FENA) - The European People's Party (EPP) Coordinator in the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael Gahler believes that there are many issues to be addressed and settled in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but currently, the most urgent and burning issue is certainly the attempts from Mr. Milorad Dodik for secession from Bosnia and Herzegovina in an attempt to form something separate from BiH.

"I think our message is clear, not only on behalf of the European Union but also on behalf of the international community, is that this must be stopped and that he should refrain from that. I think it is important to call on him to stop and revert all such moves that had already been taken in the direction of disintegration of the state. I am of the opinion that we as the EU must first threaten him with sanctions that will reflect directly on him and his entourage, but we must also let him know that we have other ways at our disposal," Gahler said in a conversation with FENA.

He explained that he primarily meant the High Representative's Bonn powers, but also that "we should already consider the option of sending additional troops to BiH within the EUFOR mission Althea, to make it clear to him that this is the Dayton Peace Agreement, that the Althea mission is also an integral part of the Dayton PA and that the Bonn powers are there to preserve the Dayton Peace Agreement”.

"Mr. Dodik, therefore, should have no doubt that we say what we mean. In this regard, I would like the EU to send an even stronger message and I am confident that High Representative Christian Schmidt is very actively preparing and considering which steps to take," Gahler said in an interview with FENA.

The German MEP did not want to speculate on who could take over the foreign ministry in the new government in Berlin, but he points out that the new head of German diplomacy will certainly have to pay more attention to the situation in BiH.

However, he points out that preventing the worst-case scenario in BiH should be the responsibility of the entire EU and the international community, not any country individually.
