Zovko: Unrealistic concepts are being imposed that drag BiH backwards

FENA Dejan Jazvić

BRUSSELS, November 17 (FENA) - These are key months before the deadline for a compromise decision that would amend the Election Law to the decisions of the BiH Constitutional Court and international courts so that we have credible elections next year. Anything that would go in any other direction would mean an extremely difficult path for Bosnia and Herzegovina and the absence of any prospects for possible EU candidate status, told FENA the vice president of the Club of the European People's Party (EPP) in the European Parliament and the vice-president of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Željana Zovko.

She warns that the current situation in BiH is extremely worrying because the dynamics of negotiations have completely changed. As she says, instead of agreements and compromise solutions, "the situation has shifted towards an explosive rhetoric between Banja Luka and Sarajevo."

"Now the delegations are coming and going through Brussels in order to try to put the issues of secession and potential war in BiH on the agenda, which is absolutely catastrophic for BiH and for its chances of obtaining candidate status.

Since coming to this position, I have warned that BiH is in a state of frozen peace and that it is necessary to see, based on the lessons learned, why we came to this position. The country that spends the least IPA funds, which has changed its administration the least and is the most late on the European path, has come into focus in an ugly way.

So far, no one has wanted to deal with BiH, expecting politicians in BiH to come to their senses and find a solution. However, now BiH has become an even more difficult case and unfortunately, its current visibility in Brussels is very poor," warns Zovko in an interview with FENA.

According to her, the EPP is trying to find an acceptable solution for BiH and return positive attention on BiH in Brussels.

"What I see as worrying is that some concepts from another political spectrum are coming to the forefront that are absolutely unrealistic for the situation in BiH and they drag the country backwards. What we insist on is that the decisions made by consensus, including those through the European Parliament, must be respected," said Zovko, adding that this middle path is an attempt to find a solution and a way out of this difficult crisis in which BiH has found itself.
