SARAJEVO, November 18 (FENA) - The Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Slovenia, the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Aleš Hojs, said today in Sarajevo that illegal migration has been one of the most important issues in the field of internal affairs in the last year.

Today, he was one of the speakers at the opening of the regional conference "Sarajevo Migration Dialogue", which seeks to strengthen cooperation and partnership in the region at the highest level, as well as exchange information and experiences, which are crucial for effective migration management.

Hojs identified three problems in the area of illegal migration in the last 18 months, namely the coronavirus pandemic, the hybrid war of Belarus on the eastern border of the European Union, and the fall of power in Afghanistan.

"All these are additional reasons why a large number of illegal migrants turned to the European Union and the countries of the Western Balkans, which destabilizes the entire European Union," said Hojs.

During 2015, we witnessed the exodus of migrants who did not want to stay in BiH or Slovenia, he says, and now the situation is similar on the eastern borders of the EU because they also do not want to stay in Lithuania or Poland but to go further, but there is a big difference between tho two cases because Belarus is waging a hybrid war.

He believes that because of that, the external borders of the EU should be closed, and if necessary by raising fences.

"The EU will not allow for the migrants to be used as a political tool or a weapon for anyone inside or outside the EU. No one wants to be a 'dormitory' for migrants. We should all make sure that children, women and those fleeing the war get asylum, and those who do not flee the war should be returned to their countries of origin," Hojs said.

To all those who think they can come to the EU without any problems, Hojs says they will be given a clear signal to give up on the road.

He added that this region should always, not only geographically, but also politically, be part of the European Union, announcing that Slovenia will continue to do everything in the coming years to integrate BiH as soon as possible and to become part of the Union.
