Conference: Ensure the visibility of children born of war

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, November 28 (FENA) - The Association "Forgotten Children of War" organized a three-day conference on "Visibility of children born of war" with the aim of ensuring the participation of women survivors and children born of war in the development of strategies, policies and processes which affect their status and thus contribute to the improvement of their position and equality in BiH society.

The conference was opened with the panel "Legal Recognition of Children Born of War", with the address of the president of the Association "Forgotten Children of War" Ajna Jusić, researcher of the international network CBOW Amra Delić, lawyer and external associate of the Association "Forgotten Children of War" Lejla Arnaut and Mirela Spahović from the FBiH Ministry of Labor and Social Policy.

The panelists presented the issue of systemic and social non-recognition of a vulnerable group of "children born of war" because in the field of human rights and legally, this category is not recognized, which results in unequal status compared to other BiH citizens.

Spahović stated that the current Law on the Protection of Civilian Victims of War did not include the category of "children born of war", and the new Law with the included category has been pending since 2019 and its adoption is planned by the end of this year.
She also stressed the importance of recognizing the needs and risks, developing specific protection protocols in working with children born of war, and stating that it is devastating that there are no training programs for psychologists and psychiatrists in working with survivors of conflict-related sexual violence.

During the second day of the conference, a panel was held on the topic "The position of women survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and their right to reparation" where they talked about the current situation in BiH when it comes to the Law on Protection of Civilian Victims of War.

The third day of the conference opened with a panel "Transitional Justice - Process and Peacebuilding in BiH" when it pointed out the need to exercise the right to justice, truth, memorialization, compensation, reparation and institutional reform because it is a pillar of transitional justice without which one cannot even think about further progress in building a better and healthier society.
