SARAJEVO, November 28 (FENA) - Professor of philosophy and holocaust and genocide studies at the Southern Connecticut University in the USA David Pettigrew stated at today's session of Circle 99 that numerous verdicts have established that Republika Srpska was an extermination or genocidal project since its very founding in line with the idea of a "Greater Serbia" - now renamed the "Serbian World", as the project sought to "permanently remove" non-Serbs from "the territory to which Bosnian Serbs claimed the right".
As an introductory speaker on "The Responsibility of the International Community to Prevent the RS from Achieving Genocidal Goals", Pettigrew recalled that after inhumane and criminal acts, the Republika Srpska was recognized by the Dayton Peace Agreement in December 1995.
“The recognition of the Republika Srpska, the award for successful genocide, was another phase of the denial of genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina, because that is the legalized purpose of founding the Republika Srpska,” said Pettigrew.
He added that since the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement, Republika Srpska has continued to prevent the return of those forcibly evicted from their homes.
He stressed that the EU, Britain and the United States must now recognize that Republika Srpska was established through the commission of genocide and that fundamental genocidal intent has continued in efforts to achieve ethnic homogeneity in the entity since 1995.
“If this founding and lasting intention of Republika Srpska is fully understood, then Milorad Dodik's current threats to secede and form his own army can only be seen as an intention to complete the 1992 genocidal goals, but now with the support of the Russian Federation. The international community should no longer deny this genocidal intent and should respond effectively,” Pettigrew said.
He added that analysts, in response to the current crisis, had recommended that EUFOR be strengthened on the ground, that NATO immediately make contingency plans, which should be accompanied by targeted sanctions against those whose actions and rhetoric threaten peace and the removal of those individuals from politics, if necessary.
He is of the opinion that the Constitution should be reformed, which would transform Bosnia and Herzegovina from the position of a nation with constituent peoples, which was imposed by the Dayton Agreement, towards the nation of Bosnia and Herzegovina with a democratic society, with citizens who have equal rights and dignity.
