Regional Index of Journalist Safety - BiH among two worst ranked countries

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, December 7 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina is the second worst ranked country in the region when it comes to the safety of journalists and free work of the media, according to the first survey entitled "Journalists' Safety Index for BiH", conducted by the BH Association journalists in collaboration with the regional network Safejournalists.net.

The research showed that one of the biggest shortcomings when it comes to the safety of journalists is the lack of special mechanisms and effective protective measures within institutions, but also distrust towards those institutions, which is why journalists whose security is endangered most often turn to NGOs for support. from the Association of BH Journalists.

“The police generally react quickly to reported cases, but the problem arises when cases reach prosecutors, i.e. courts. Threats made through social media are rarely sanctioned. In addition, politicians and state institutions rarely condemn attacks on journalists, and much more often in the role of those who attack and seek to restrict media freedom, which sends an extremely discouraging message and creates a sense of insecurity among journalists and editors,” said the Secretary General of BH Journalists Borka Rudić.

The Journalists' Safety Index was conducted as a pilot project this year, and the research mostly included data related to 2020.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is ranked with an overall score of 3.00. Only Serbia was rated worse than our country with an index of 2.95, Albania was ranked with 3.38, Kosovo with 3.39, Montenegro with 3.59, while Croatia was rated with the best with 3.73 and Northern Macedonia with a score of 3.93.

The number of reported death threats to journalists in BiH during 2020 is six, slightly less than in 2019, when eight were registered. It is worrying that in all reported cases, none of the attackers has yet been sanctioned.

Of the three reported physical attacks on journalists last year, only one case was referred to the Prosecutor's Office for further action. The number of attacks and threats to media houses and organizations is on the rise, and none of the seven registered cases from last year have been sanctioned, the BH Journalists' Association said in a statement.
