POTOČARI, July 11 (FENA) - The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Alice Wairimu Nderitu, said today in Potočari that it is extremely important to deal with genocide denial and hate speech, and that this is imperative for advancing efforts towards reconciliation in the country.

"My mandate was created due to the failure of the international community and member states, the whole world in fact, to prevent and react to the genocide that was committed first against the Tutsi people in Rwanda in 1994, and then against the Bosniaks in Srebrenica in 1995," said Nderitu at the commemoration on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica.

She stated that the prevention of genocide requires targeted action that includes joint work and strengthening imperatives regarding peace, reconciliation, justice and the fight against hate speech.

"Hate speech is present in elections and election processes because it causes tensions, polarization, and sometimes violence in society. The UN wants to call on all leaders to find a consensus and to find a common way to fight against hate speech. We will continue to support the construction and expansion of initiatives and processes of reconciliation between different ethnic and religious groups and to fight against the rhetoric of division," said the Deputy Secretary-General of the UN.

Nderitu announced that her office will publish a new document next week entitled "Fighting Holocaust and Genocide Denial, Protecting Survivors, Preserving Remembrance and Improving Prevention".

"Accountability for crimes that had been committed is necessary not only for justice for the victims, not only for building public trust in government institutions but also for preventing future crimes. This is precisely why we must continue to support the struggle of the Mothers of Srebrenica," concluded Nderitu.
