SREBRENICA, January 16 (FENA) - The number of visits to the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center - memorial site and cemetery for genocide victims is increasing year after year, and last year the number of visits by organized groups, both domestic and foreign, increased compared to the previous year.

The curator of the Memorial Center, Azir Osmanović, told FENA that more than 40,494 visitors visited this center in 2017, of which 22,754 were domestic and 17,740 were foreign visitors, in organized groups that announce themselves to the Memorial Center, while at least as many visitors were recorded who came without notice or in so-called individual visits.

“When all of these figures are put together, including the number of visitors on the day of janazah, according to our database which is updated daily, 104,110 visitors visited the Memorial Center Srebrenica-Potočari in 2017,” Mr. Osmanović emphasizes.

The increase in the number of visitors to the Memorial Center, he believes, is in the fact that last year the number of tourists in BiH increased, which is reflected in the number of visitors to this center. Namely, in addition to Sarajevo and Mostar, most of those who visit BiH, he says, want to visit Srebrenica and the Potočari Memorial Center as well.

Mr. Osmanović says that last year there was a growing number of visitors from Malaysia and Turkey, and some travel agencies have decided to include a Memorial Center as part of their tour in the Balkans, which should be visited as the site of the biggest war crime in Europe after the Second World War.

“There is also a large number of students from various countries in the world who study history, international relations, human rights and other departments that have to do with these issues. These are mostly groups from America, Australia, Turkey, Italy and England. The majority of domestic visitors are pupils of primary and secondary schools from FBiH, members of various associations and groups of citizens, jamaats etc.”, Osmanović said.

So far 6,575 victims of genocide have been buried at the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center.
