Wigemark: Door for BiH as a future EU member is open (VIDEO)

FENA

SARAJEVO, January 16 (FENA) – The Head of the European Union Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina and EU Special Representative, Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, said that the door to BiH as a future EU member was open and that the way in which the country will get to that door and cross the threshold – has already been clearly defined.

In his welcoming address at a New Year’s reception held last night in Sarajevo, hosted by him and EUFOR Commander in BiH, Major General Anton Waldner, Mr. Wigemark reiterated his earlier position, which is that the ball is again on the BiH's side of the field, that is, that everything is now in the hands of the representatives of the BiH authorities.

“Anyone who has any knowledge of football knows that, in order to score a goal, all players need to cooperate,” he stressed.

Recalling last year, he said that too much energy was spent on fruitless political talks. He noted, however, that there were still some results because the set of Excise Laws and the Rural Strategy were adopted, which is good news for agricultural producers in BiH.

He said this year would be extremely important for BiH and announced that in February the European Commission would present a new strategy for the successful and rapid integration of the Western Balkans countries, including BiH, to whom he will clearly say what is expected of them on the path of European integration.

“Of course, the results of the European integration process will require political parties in BiH to leave their differing positions aside, at least in key issues concerning European integration,” said Mr. Wigemark.

The attendees were also addressed by the EUFOR Commander in BiH, Mr. Waldner, who praised the work of the BiH Armed Forces (BiH AF) and law enforcement agencies, stressing that he highly values their professionalism and responsible approach to the business.

He pointed out the excellent cooperation between EUFOR members in BiH with BiH AF and members of law enforcement agencies, as confirmed by the first joint exercise "Quick Response 2017", and said that EUFOR will continue to act in this way in the future.

As another example of excellent cooperation with agencies and institutions in BiH, he also mentioned the elimination of more than 1,600 tons of surplus ammunition and more than 100 inspections of BiH AF ammunition and weapons storage facilities.

In addition, numerous training activities were conducted with members of BiH AF, and he announced that this year there will be even more.

He stressed that EUFOR will continue to support BiH's efforts to advance closer to the EU in 2018, through projects such as the development of a new and sustainable anti-mine action strategy, through the continuation of the "EU Star" project and through joint exercises with BiH AF and agencies for law enforcement in BiH.
