Izetbegović and Jusko discuss connecting Sarajevo and Belgrade by modern road

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, January 26 (FENA) - BiH Presidency Member Bakir Izetbegović invited to today’s working meeting the BiH Minister of Communications and Transport Ismir Jusko, ahead of the announced meeting between Mr. Izetbegović, President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić on Monday in Turkey.

The main topic of the discussion was the construction of a modern road linking Sarajevo and Belgrade.

Mr. Jusko told Mr. Izetbegović that two suggestions of the future route, or the most probable route, have been crystallized so far, namely Sarajevo - Belgrade via Tuzla, and Sarajevo - Belgrade via Višegrad. Both directions are included in the strategic documents, and both are essential for the overall development of the road infrastructure in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its positioning in the regional and international road network.

Mr. Jusko also recalled that the FBiH Parliament had decided that this road to Belgrade would go through Tuzla, and then further through Brčko and Bijeljina, which was supported by the local authorities in the area.

He emphasized that the Tuzla Canton, as well as the entire area of northern Bosnia, had the largest population and that its economy and natural resources are one of the economic pillars of BiH. According to expert analyzes, some existing main roads in the area of Tuzla have the average daily passage of up to 22,000 vehicles, a parameter that suggests a significant economic viability of the construction of a fast road from Sarajevo to Tuzla and further through Brčko and Bijeljina.

Having all these indicators in mind, Mr. Jusko told Mr. Izetbegović that the Ministry supports the linking of Sarajevo and Belgrade through Tuzla and believes that their Turkish friends will have understanding and support for this project.

On the other hand, the Ministry thinks that this does not mean that they should ignore the route through eastern Bosnia and the linking of Belgrade and Sarajevo via a fast road and a highway through Višegrad or Goražde.

RS government supports that route, the Turkish side is also interested, which President Erdogan repeated in his visit to Serbia, namely Sandžak and Novi Pazar.

Mr. Izetbegovic and Mr. Jusko agreed that it was in the interest of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina that Goražde and the economic and commercial potential of that city and canton are not left out of important international road corridors, stated the BiH Ministry of Communications and Transport.
