Concern over failure to implement operational agreement between BiH and EUROPOL

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, January 31 (FENA) - Head of the Department for BiH and Albania at the European Commission's Directorate General for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Michela Matuella, at today's meeting with Bosnia and Herzegovina's Minister of Security Dragan Mektić, expressed concern over the delay in the implementation of the operational agreement between BiH and EUROPOL and that the implementation of this agreement represents a major step for BiH in the process of establishing the rule of law on the country’s EU path.

Mektić pointed out that he would do everything to avoid the suspension of the agreement because it would bring a number of negative effects, because BiH would thus become a black spot in the region and in Europe, and the only state that does not have established full cooperation with the European Police Office.

“This cooperation is very important in the fight against terrorism, extremism, organized crime and corruption. Unfortunately, due to meddling of the politics, we have not agreed on the contact point for cooperation with EUROPOL and we are the only country in the region that has not send a liaison officer to the headquarters of EUROPOL in The Hague,” said Mektić.

Matuella presented the plan of activities of the European Commission in the coming period in the field of rule of law.

Apart from Matuele, the delegation from Brussels included Alberto Cammarat, Jan Petry, and Richard Wood, Head of the Rule of Law Department in the EU Delegation in Sarajevo, stated the BiH Ministry of Security.
