SARAJEVO, February 2 (FENA) - The exhibition “Sarajevo fragments of Safavid rugs” was held last night at the Ethnological Department of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the framework of the 130th anniversary of the founding of this institution of culture.

For the first time, the Sarajevo public was able to see fragments dating back to the 17th century that were purchased at the end of the 19th century.

As the exhibition author Marica Filipović pointed out, one part was exhibited before the Second World War.

“The fragments are extremely valuable, not only because they date back to the 17th century, but because there is a very small number of rugs in the world where the maker’s signature and the year of production has been preserved. They belong to a group of vase carpets. It is a group of carpets that have been named after the motif of the vase that sometimes appears to them, but it is not obligatory, it is rather a special weaving technique,” Ms. Filipović said.
