EU officials: Commitment of political leaders to implementing reforms is crucial

SARAJEVO, February 5 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina has a high chance of gaining candidate status, but it all depends on the pace of implementation of the reforms, high officials of the European Union noted today in Sarajevo ahead of tomorrow's presentation of the EU Enlargement Strategy for the Western Balkan countries by 2025.

“This requires political commitment and the willingness of the political leaders,” they said.

They recalled that the Presidency and members of the BiH Presidency met last week in Brussels with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, who repeated a clear message that implementation of the Reform Agenda objectives is of utmost importance.

They are proud of the work that has been done in BiH, which has been long and sometimes painful, but they believe that the best possible initiative was made in the country where it was necessary to unify the cantons, entities and the state's responses to questions from the European Commission Questionnaire.

They are still waiting for these responses, but they were informed that the responses have been unified on 15,000 pages and when they reach the European Commission, they will start reviewing them and preparing an opinion on whether BiH is ready to move into a new phase of full membership negotiations.

The fact that has been repeatedly said today is that the Western Balkan countries, all six of them, for whom the Strategy was prepared, are part of the family of European countries, but also that this period is of paramount importance for them. They also said that the focus of the Bulgarian presidency would be the Western Balkans.

This opportunity is important to take advantage of, and at the moment Montenegro and Serbia are in the best position. Montenegro has opened negotiations on 30 chapters, negotiations on three have been closed, while Serbia has opened negotiations on 12 chapters, two of which have been closed.

However, European officials could not project whether Montenegro and Serbia would be the first countries to join the European Union because, as they reiterated, the speed of the opening and closing of the chapters depends solely on the political leaders in each of the countries.
