Wigemark: The role of news agencies has been underestimated (VIDEO)

FENA

SARAJEVO, February 6 (FENA) - Head of the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina and EU Special Representative, Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, visited today the Federal News Agency (FENA), where he met with the management of the agency and talked about the activities and the functioning of this news agency.

Ambassador Wigemark expressed his satisfaction because he had the opportunity to visit FENA and emphasized the importance of the agency's work, especially in the present times when there is a need for professional reporting and for the news agencies to convey facts and accurate information.

"News does not reach us just like that, someone has to report on it, and reporters must be professionals who understand things and understand what professional journalism really means," Wigemark said.

He emphasized that the EU attaches great importance to it, and therefore the media and its freedoms, as well as the professionalism of the media, are crucial for countries that are striving to become EU members.

He noted that we have already seen what the consequences could be caused by lack of adequate information, as well as the phenomenon of "fake news".

“Therefore, I really appreciate FENA’s work and the work of the people here, who do it day and night, including weekends, and whose news reporting is very much used by the European Union here in Bosnia and Herzegovina” said the Head of the EU Delegation to BiH.

He concluded that the role of news agencies is underestimated today, although they represent accurate and reliable source of information.

FENA General Manager Elmir Huremović thanked Ambassador Wigemark for recognizing the role of FENA, not only as a media, but also as a serious partner of the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“This is confirmed by the fact that FENA, through its work and engagement, represents continuous efforts of the EU to help BiH,” Huremović pointed out.

In addition to this, he added that FENA promotes all the positive steps that BiH makes on its path to EU and NATO integration, and that it may be the best example of the media doing its best to promote the EU path of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Huremović noted that the quality of work in this media house is also reflected in the recently acquired membership in the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA), as the only BiH representative in an association that brings together all the leading news agencies from the EU countries.

One of the topics of the visit was also the EU path of BiH, and Ambassador Wigemark said that now is the moment when we can be optimistic about that.

He believes that there are possibilities for BiH to move faster on the European path and that if citizens are not satisfied with the work of politicians, then they should do something about this issue.

In addition to this, Wigemark and FENA representatives talked about the BiH economy and the public sector.

Ambassador Wigemark noted that the economy of our country is at more or less the same level in comparison with other countries in the region, while the public sector is too big and some measures need to be taken in that regard.
