SARAJEVO, February 6 (FENA) - The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security Federica Mogherini said today in the European Parliament in Strasbourg that it is very clear that the EU will share a common future with the Western Balkans, which is also the main message from the EU Enlargement Strategy for the Western Balkans.

Mogherini also pointed out that the deadlines for joining the EU, such as the indicative date of 2025, are not the final deadlines and that the Strategy is very clear. She emphasized that the Western Balkans is geographically linked and has the same heritage, and confirmed the unequivocal European perspective for all the six countries of the Western Balkans.

She referred to reforms in the region, saying that politicians made a clear decision for their countries to join the European Union.

“Today, we adopted the Strategy and opened a new path. The next months will be not only intense but also crucial to make sure that this historic and unique opportunity is seized. We will not stay at number 27 and I hope there will be more of us. We express determination and readiness, and the coming months could be crucial,” she said.

The European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn believes that this is a historic opportunity for the region that historically belongs to the EU. All the countries of the Western Balkans should have a European perspective.

“Everyone in the region should have an interest in working together and helping each other,” he stressed.

Hahn also added that the dates and years are indicative and represent a framework, but that they are not impossible to meet.

“Conditions must be met. The EU will not accept any country that has not solved its issues,” he stressed.

He pointed out that this could generate positive pressure, as a large number of citizens demand to be part of the EU.

The Western Balkans Strategy includes the current situation and the positions and foreseen deadlines for EU accession for BiH, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, and Kosovo.
