No agreement on contact-point location for cooperation with EUROPOL

FENA

SARAJEVO, February 7 (FENA) – Minister of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragan Mektić said that not even after today’s meeting of representatives of police agencies and interior ministries from all levels of government, there was no agreement on the location of contact-point for BiH’s cooperation with EUROPOL.

This, he underscored, makes BiH the only country in Europe that does not have its liaison officer at EUROPOL HQ in The Hague.

Mr. Mektić told the media after the meeting that the representatives of Republika Srpska MIA insisted that the contact-point be at the address Trg BiH 1, as indicated in the Agreement on Operational and Strategic Cooperation with EUROPOL, although it is just the address, not the exact location.

However, the representatives of all other police agencies insist that the contact-point location is in the Directorate for Coordination of Police Bodies.

“This is a classic, political obstruction, typical for BiH politicians, who want the security institutions to not be functional, because if they were, then they would reach the politicians and their crime,” stated the BiH Security Minister.

He recalled that the Operational Agreement with EUROPOL had been signed two years ago, which means that they have been trying to find a solution for the contact-point location for two years now.

“The European Commission is giving us very serious indications that if this issue is not resolved very soon, they would give up on the Agreement,” Mr. Mektić warned.

He believes that the agreement on the contact-point cannot be reached because the politics is deeply involved in the police agencies.

The consequences of the possible termination of the agreement, BiH Security Minister argues, will be solely suffered by the BiH citizens, as it would reduce the level of security in the country.

“Now again we must seek some ways out, for which I would use my powers,” Mr. Mektić said, explaining that he could make a decision to send a liaison officer from BiH to The Hague because in this case the international agreements are being implemented by the Security Ministry.

Among other things, he noted that yesterday was agreed upon the location of the AFIS server, needed for the exchange of information necessary for the work of police agencies, which would be in the building of the BiH Ministry of Security.

As he said, they have been trying to agree on the location of that server for the past six years which, Mr. Mektić stresses, is absurd.

He said he would not allow the Cooperation Agreement with EUROPOL to be terminated due to any kind of political interest, as the security of the BiH citizens is more important to him.
