Bićo: BiH produced almost all of its food and could continue to do so today

FENA Muhamed Hadžibegić

SARAJEVO, September 2 (FENA) – President of the Association of Farmers of FBiH, Nedžad Bićo, told FENA that Bosnia and Herzegovina could produce almost all of its food for its needs as it did 30 years ago.

He recalled that during the SFRY, BiH produced food to meet about 80 percent of its own needs, and imported mainly crops that could not grow here, such as tropical fruits.

Commenting on the report of the BiH Foreign Trade Chamber that 92 percent of the food consumed in BiH is being imported today, Bićo said that this is shameful information for BiH authorities because it is not normal for us to import this much food with all the land and water we have in our country.

He specified that more than 50 percent of the agricultural land has not been cultivated for years, or about one million hectares that had been cultivated before the war.

Bićo also announced that a founding assembly of the state-level association of farmers would be held in Sarajevo in mid-September.
