SARAJEVO, March 9 (FENA) - Forests can only be preserved as natural resources if we have forestry workers exclusively in public companies because deforestation is caused by giving licenses to third parties to exploit the forests, told FENA Lejla Ćatić, President of the Independent Union of Forestry, Wood and Paper Processing.
She explained that there are mostly cantonal forestry institutions in the FBiH, some of which have their own production, but most decide to introduce third parties when it comes to logging and exploitation.
The way these forest protection institutions are organized and operate is closely related to how much forests we will have in the future,” said Ćatić.
She recalled that the lack of a law on the FBiH level on forests is a particular problem because, although almost all cantons have that law, it is a joint and not a shared competence when it comes to forestry.
“Therefore, it is necessary that there is a law on forests at the level of the Federation of BiH and the canton-level legislation is more precise in solving the problems,” said Ćatić.
She added that the trade unions and employers have insisted that the duty and function of forest rangers returns to the system of the forestry industry, because their exclusion has caused problems in the forestry industry such as illegal logging and its inadequate identification and processing.
Ćatić emphasized that we were the only ones in the region to receive national FSC standards for Bosnia and Herzegovina last year, which means that all forest estates are obliged to align their business operations to the general and regional FSC standards.
