SARAJEVO, April 6 (FENA) - Numerous delegations of all levels of government in Bosnia and Herzegovina laid flowers today and paid tribute to all the victims at several locations in Sarajevo on the occasion of the Day of the City of Sarajevo, April 6.
Flowers were laid at the Eternal Flame Memorial memorial, the Kovači cemetery, the Memorial to the murdered children of the besieged Sarajevo 1992-1995, the Memorial to the murdered police officers in the Great Park and the city cemetery.
The Mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karić, congratulated the Day of the City saying that it is a day when the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its beauty are celebrated, but also the courage of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its citizens.
She also said that the reconstructed Bistrik railway station, which also houses the "Valter Defends Sarajevo" Museum, will open today to the visitors and a solemn session of the City Council will be held when awards will be presented.
April 6 is the most significant date in the history of Sarajevo. It is the day when Sarajevo was liberated from fascist occupation during the Second World War, but also the day that symbolizes the beginning of the siege of Sarajevo in the last war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
That is why April 6 is marked as the day of the liberation of the city in the Second World War and as the Day of the CIty.
During the siege of the city, the longest in the history of modern warfare, about 11,500 people were killed, including 1,601 children.
At least 50,000 people were injured in the shelling. More than 300 grenades were fired daily during the siege of Sarajevo, from the surrounding hills, where the artillery of the Yugoslav People's Army and the Republika Srpska Army were positioned.
