SARAJEVO, April 6 (FENA) - Mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karić, officially opened the renovated Bistrik Railway Station today, on the occasion of April 6 - the Day of the City of Sarajevo.

She pointed out that this facility, a national monument of BiH, opens in honor of all young people and all generations to come. The building, which was built 116 years ago, today, as she said, shines in full splendor making every Sarajevan proud.

Karić wished that every next April 6 - the Day of the City of Sarajevo, will be marked by the opening of beautiful facilities such as the Bistrik Railway Station.

“It is impossible to stand in this place today without feeling emotion. Many children played here, or listened to their parents' most beautiful stories about the Bistrik Railway Station. I am happy that this national monument is now a restored testament to the time that has passed, but also a testament for all future generations of young people who are coming,” said Karić.

The Bistrik Railway Station, which connected Sarajevo to the eastern parts of BiH, became operational in 1906 as part of a railway construction project launched during the period of Austro-Hungarian rule. The length of the narrow-gauge railway was 161.5 kilometers, and its construction took 15 years.

The Bistrik Railway Station witnessed time, beautiful stories, beautiful loves - an inseparable part of the cultural and historical heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The citizens especially remembered the train called "Ćiro", which arrived at the BistriK Railway Station every day for seven decades, transporting passengers, travelers, but also fresh food for the Bistrik market from Eastern Bosnia. The last train arrived at this station in 1978, when it was replaced by new, more modern trains.

The Station also gained world fame, because this is where the footage for the film "Walter Defends Sarajevo" directed by Hajrudin Šiba Krvavac was filmed. In the building of the BistriK Railway Station, there is also part of the museum exhibition of the Sarajevo Film Center from the film "Walter Defends Sarajevo".

Within the building on the first floor there is a space for a cafe and restaurant, which offers a beautiful view of the city.
