SARAJEVO, May 11 (FENA) - President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor in Sarajevo today expressed strong support for Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region in their efforts to become members of the European Union.
Pahor is participating in the 11th Sarajevo Business Forum, whose main topic is "Nearshoring - a perspective for the region", and participants will discuss the potential and possibilities of relocating production from European countries to the countries of Southeast Europe.
Pahor said that the SBF has proved itself as a successful forum for discussing investments, and pointed out that the condition for economic prosperity is the political stability of a country. He added that the political leaders have the task of creating investment opportunities in the country.
"The EU has no alternative and it is an answer to all the questions in the Balkans. BiH's EU integration has slowed considerably, leading to unacceptable ideas about changing borders and nationalism. EU enlargement to the Western Balkans is a first-rate issue, especially after Russia's invasion of Ukraine," Pahor said.
He stated that he suggested to European leaders that BiH should get candidate status without additional preconditions. Now BiH needs to meet the 14 priorities from the EC Opinion.
"My idea is to grant BiH candidate status, and then institutions and leaders are asked to meet those conditions. We have been waiting for a long time for BiH to fulfill these 14 conditions and we do not think that they will be fulfilled any time soon, so we need to change the tactics, first for Brussels to support the candidate status, and then for BiH to start fulfilling the conditions. I think that idea is the most acceptable one," said Pahor.
