SARAJEVO, May 2 (FENA) - The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Thomasa Fitschen, spoke today on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, May 3, stressing that a functional, dynamic democracy requires an independent media environment and unlimited freedom of the press.
At the same time, he underlines that World Press Freedom Day reminds us that media freedom and freedom of expression belong to universal human rights.
- Free journalism is the best medicine against violations of human rights and abuse of power. Unhindered work of journalists is very necessary for our societies - emphasizes the German ambassador in a statement sent on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day.
He reminds that this year's motto of the World Press Freedom Day clearly shows: "Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights".
- Journalists all over the world contribute to exposing disinformation, creating pluralistic debates and making the stronger hear the voice of the weaker. Investigative journalism is a counterweight to politics, society and the economy and contributes to respect for human rights, the fight against corruption and the free formation of public opinion among the population - emphasized Ambassador Fitschen.
Furthermore, it warns that many representatives of the media around the world expose themselves to animosity, violence and persecution during the performance of their important work.
- Germany and in the Republika Srpska are concerned about the restriction of freedom of expression and freedom of the media. Therefore, today I once again appeal to the National Assembly of the RS not to criminalize defamation. Critical reporting is not a crime - the statement said.
Ambassador Fitschen also reminds that according to the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, all human rights and civil liberties are explicitly recognized and protected, and that their respect, which goes without saying, is also a prerequisite for the country's accession to the European Union, it was announced from Embassies of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
