VUKOVAR, July 6 (FENA) - Ultramarathon runners set off from Ovčara in Croatia towards Potočari this morning in order to pay tribute to the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica this year.
Ultramarathoners will run in five stages and cover a section of 227 kilometers. The goal is to send a message that there will never be a war and that the genocide in Srebrenica will never happen again, to anyone, anywhere.
The leader of the 12th Vukovar-Srebrenica ultramarathon, Ekrem Bećirović, told FENA that nine runners are headed for Potočari.
"The Peace Marathon is dedicated to all the innocent victims of the past war, especially the victims of Vukovar and Srebrenica. Our fight for justice and truth is something that will never end, and this ultramarathon is dedicated to that goal," said Bećirović.
The organizer of the ultramarathon is the Council of the Bosniak National Minority of the City of Zagreb, and the sponsors are the President of the Republic of Croatia, Zoran Milanović, members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denis Bećirović and Željko Komšić, and the Mayor of the City of Zagreb, Tomislav Tomašević.
The arrival of the ultramarathoners in Potočari is expected on July 10 at around 12:30 p.m.
