SARAJEVO, June 5 (FENA) - The Day of the Martyrs was marked today on the second day of the Ramadan Eid at the Shaheed Memorial Cemetery "Kovači" in Sarajevo, with prayers and laying flowers and wreaths to those who gave their lives to defend their country.
Flowers and wreaths were laid by members of the families, delegations of veterans' associations, representatives of state authorities, the Armed Forces of BiH and political representatives.
Member of the BiH Presidency Šefik Džaferović emphasized that citizens today remember and pay tribute to the best sons of Bosnia and Herzegovina, those who are most deserving of the freedom we enjoy today in an independent and internationally recognized state.
"It is up to this generation to repay the Bosnian martyrs and the deceased soldiers. We will do this by taking care of their families permanently and continually fighting until we accomplish the idea all of together fought for, which is a united and democratic BiH, a state of equal peoples in which all people will have equal freedoms and rights,” said Džaferović.
He emphasized that much has been done when it comes to taking care of the families of the killed defenders, but that much more remains to be done, and there is also a lot of work ahead of us in building a united and democratic BiH.
“There are some retrograde forces that are still trying to steer BiH in some other direction. I tell them that they will not succeed in this, and we will reach our goal. They will not succeed in their intent. They failed when BiH was in a much harder position, and they will fail today, when BiH is in a much better position. It is just the fact that it is a waste of precious time. BiH's path is membership in the EU and the NATO,” concluded Džaferović.
Members of the delegation laid flowers at the grave of first president of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegović.
