JAJCE, August 21 (FENA) - The Pliva Lakes are the largest natural lakes in Bosnia and Herzegovina and form a part of the tourist offer that brings more than one hundred thousand tourists to Jajce every year.

The Pliva River in its middle course created two lakes, the Large and Small, which are protected as a national monument.

The lakes are located at a distance of four kilometers from the center of Jajce. Dragan Glavaš, expert associate of the Agency for Cultural, Historical and Natural Heritage and Development of Tourist Potentials of the City of Jajce, told FENA that this area is one of the most visited tourist places in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“More than 100,000 guests visit this place every year. People come from all over the country and all over the world. It is a place for visiting, swimming, sports and recreation,” Glavaš pointed out and added that the area has been completely preserved.

He emphasized that the Pliva Lakes have always attracted tourists, athletes and nature lovers.

He recalled that in 1963, Large Pliva Lake hosted the seventh European and Extraordinary World Championship in kayaking and canoeing on calm waters.

The Turkish kayaking team, as well as teams from all surrounding countries, are preparing for the Olympic Games, world and European championships here.

In addition to the two lakes within the national monument, there is a cute collection of 20 tiny wooden watermills, located between the Small and Large Pliva Lake, that are several hundred years old. The part where the watermills are located is the natural border between the two lakes.

The Large Pliva Lake is located at an altitude of 425 meters. It is 3,300 meters long, and its width is approximately one kilometer, while the maximum depth of the lake is 36 meters. The Small Pliva Lake is smaller in surface, it is about one kilometer long and about 430 meters wide, and the maximum depth of the lake is 36 meters.
