Izetbegović meets with SEDE delegation

SARAJEVO, April 3 (FENA) - BiH Presidency Chairman Bakir Izetbegović received a delegation of the European Parliament's Subcommittee on Security and Defense (SEDE).

The Chairman of the Security and Defense Subcommittee Anna Elżbieta Fotyga expressed her gratitude for the reception and expressed her support for the European perspective of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Chairman Izetbegović expressed his satisfaction with the visit of the delegation and the dedication of the institutions of the European Union to the continuation of the European path of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He expressed appreciation and expectation that the support of EU institutions and member states will continue in the future as part of BiH's progress, especially in the process of gaining candidate status for full membership in the European Union.

The importance of adopting the European Union Strategy "A Credible Enlargement Perspective for and Enhanced EU Engagement with the Western Balkans", which clearly positions the Western Balkans as part of Europe, and underlines the open prospect of EU membership for all Western Balkan countries on the basis of individual merits respecting all norms and implementing the necessary reforms.

The collocutors emphasized that the submission of Bosnia and Herzegovina's Responses to the Questionnaire of the European Commission to prepare the opinion on BiH's application for membership of the European Union represented a significant step forward on the European path of BiH and the completion of one of the key phases in the process of accession to the European Union.

The topic of the discussion was the current political, security and socio-economic situation in BiH, with an emphasis of the continuation of the reform process and the acceleration of activities to strengthen the rule of law and fight against crime and corruption in order to improve the quality of life of citizens.

The collocutors exchanged views on the amendments to the Election Law and expressed the commitment to intensify efforts to reach agreement on these issues.

The delegation also included the members - SEDE representative Cristian Dan Preda, who is also AFET's Permanent Rapporteur for BiH, representative Tonino Picula, the substitute member and chairman of the Delegation for Relations with BiH, and Head of the EU Delegation to BiH Lars-Gunnar Wigemark.

On behalf of the BiH Presidency member from the Republika Srpska, Mladen Ivanić, the meeting was attended by Aleksandar Savović, while on behalf of the Croat member of the BiH Presidency Dragan Čović the meeting was attended by the Advisor Tugomir Čuljak, the BiH Presidency said.
