SARAJEVO, April 27 (FENA) - The ceremony of transfer of authority of the EUFOR Chief of Staff between Brigadier General József Szpisják and Brigadier General Gábor Horváth was held today at Butmir base in Sarajevo.
During the ceremony, the departing Brigadier General József Szpisják said that, when he had taken over the position of Chief of Staff of EUFOR a year ago, he had given several promises to the authorities and people in BiH, and that he had fulfilled them all.
“My approach was to set clear and realistic goals of my work here instead of striving for the abstract goal of preserving peace. I got a lot of feedback from local communities that welcomed the fact that we are more inclined to practice,” Mr. Szpisják said.
He added that while the execution of the EUFOR mission Operation ALTHEA is teamwork, the contribution of each individual is crucial.
“Speaking of communities, I must say that I am proud to have built and strengthened the ties with BiH authorities. When I talk about ties, I do not mean just the professional relationship. These ties are based on mutual respect and sincere concern,” he pointed out.
Brigadier General Gábor Horváth said that it was a great honor for him to assume the duty of the Chief of EUFOR Staff, and that the goal in his work will be to ensure a stable and secure environment.
He said that in his work he would be guided by five simple principles and the first of them would ensure the unity of command.
“Then contribute to the joint effort. This for me means giving the best possible contribution to the efforts of the international community and BiH authorities to ensure the prosperity and progress of BiH,” Mr. Horváth said.
He added that he wanted to continue cooperation with all levels, state authorities, the BiH Armed Forces, and law enforcement agencies.
“To ensure that the EUFOR Commander can efficiently and effectively lead EUFOR troops. Last but not least, it is important to maintain the appropriate level of support in the Butmir base and all other EUFOR locations in BiH,” Mr. Horváth Concluded.
EUFOR Commander, Major General Martin Dorfer, thanked the departing Brigadier General József Szpisják for his service and welcomed Brigadier General Gábor Horváth.
