BiH welcomes United Nations efforts to address migration issues

FENA Muamer Selimbegovic

SARAJEVO, November 18 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina has been observing with great attention the activities of the United Nations (UN) in the negotiations on the UN Compact on Migration document.

"In this regard, the Mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the UN in New York has regularly participated in all the meetings that deal with this topic," FENA learns from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA BiH).

According to the ministry, Bosnia and Herzegovina considers that the issue of migration, as an extremely complex issue, can be dealt with only at the regional and global level, within multilateral organizations.

In this context, Bosnia and Herzegovina welcomes the UN's efforts towards a comprehensive analysis and suggestions of possible responses to this great challenge, and appreciates that this is the only way to properly set the guidelines that would initially mitigate, and later resolve the causes, as well as the consequences of this problem (migration issues).

The MFA of BiH points out that the competent institutions are in the process of reviewing the latest version of the proposed document for adoption at the upcoming summit in Marrakesh (Morocco), and that after a detailed analysis and taking into account the interests of BiH, they will propose a final position on its potential acceptance.

At the same time, they specify that the proposed document is not legally binding, but rather that it is primarily an expression of political will of the UN member states.

"In accordance with the BiH Presidency decision, Bosnia and Herzegovina in Marrakesh will be represented at the level of the BiH Presidency Chairman," it was said from the MFA BiH in response to a query regarding the Marrakesh summit scheduled for December 10 and 11.
