SARAJEVO, March 8 (FENA) - In almost all major media outlets in Bosnia and Herzegovina, women are present as journalists, reporters, editors and program directors. These are the data that the Agency for Gender Equality of BiH has at their disposal, told FENA the Director of the Agency for Gender Equality of BiH, Samra Filipović-Hadžiabdić, in an interview on the occasion of March 8, International Women's Day.

Filipović-Hadžiabdić noted that the Gender Equality Agency of BiH, Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees BiH, in cooperation with the Commission for the Enforcement of Gender Equality of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, initiated the harmonization of the Law on Public Broadcasting Service, the Law on Broadcasting System and the Law on Communications with the Law on Gender Equality in BiH.

Filipović-Hadžiabdić emphasized that "the purpose of the amendments is to introduce equal gender representation in the governing structures of the BiH radio and television system, equality in employment, equal representation of the interests of both genders in program contents, and program prohibitions of offensive, stereotypical and degrading representation of women and men based on their gender".

“The Broadcasting Code of Conduct adopted by the BiH Communications Regulatory Agency, in Article 4 – dealing with Hate speech, states, among other things, that the RTV stations will not broadcast programs that contain or incite discrimination and/or violence based on belonging to an ethnic group, sex/gender, sexual orientation, or any content which encourages incitement/sexual harassment,” said Filipović-Hadžiabdić.

She added that "In order to promote gender equality in the media, the Agency organized training sessions for about 50 male and female journalists aware of the basics of the concept of gender equality, legal regulations and reporting on cases of domestic violence".

“Considering that in the past period media trainings were conducted and other joint activities on the topic of gender equality, there is a positive shift in respect of these standards in the media, the use of gender sensitive language, giving importance to issues related to domestic violence and violence against women,” said Filipović-Hadžiabdić.

However, as she said, most private and public media in BiH do not have editorial policies that would support the preparation and broadcasting of programs that include issues of protection of women's human rights and gender equality.

“In that sense, the Gender Equality Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina has drafted a Recommendation on gender stereotypes and sexist attitudes and languages in the media in BiH and submitted it to the media outlets with a request to adhere to it in the future,” said Filipović-Hadžiabdić.
